The Therapeutic Effect of Aloe vera on the Peptic Ulcer

Abstract

|
Author has administered Aloe vera powder to 67 patients with peptic ulcer diagnosed by the gastroendoscopy visiting to the department of Internal Medicine, Guro Hospital,. Korea University College of Medicine and tried to assess the therapeutic effect of Aloe vera on 27 patients who attended follow-up study until the scar stage of the ulcer. Fasting serum gastrin levels have been determined before and after the treatment with Aloe vera. Author has also performed CLO test ´ on 14 patients before and after the treatment whose positive reaction reflected the presence of Helicobacter pylori in the mucosa.
1) Peptic ulcer healed after 42 days of intake of Aloe on an average. Average 38 days were needed for healing of gastric ulcer and 46 days for duodenal ulcer. 23 cases (about 85%) were cured including I case (about 4%) showing skin eruption while Aloe were not effective in 4 cases (about 15%).
2) Fasting serum gastrin levels were within normal range before and after the treatment in both gastric and duodenal ulcers.
3) Positive responses of CLO test were highly associated with gastric ulcer in 100% of the cases and with duodenal ulcer in 85.7% of the ones before treatment.
With the above result of study author would propose that Aloe vera could be valuable in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease after basic research through animal experiment and more clinical studies on it.
